Light Rail Transit (LRT) – Phase 1, Astana, Kazakhstan
Design & Construction of Five Elevated Stations (114–118) with Steel Entrances and Pedestrian Overpasses — ~4,000 Tons of Structural Steel
Overview
Phase 1 of the Astana Light Rail Transit (LRT) is a flagship urban mobility program designed to enhance the city’s image, connectivity, and travel efficiency. This scope covers five elevated stations—114, 115, 116, 117, and 118—plus steel station entrances and enclosed pedestrian overpasses. The package totals ~4,000 tons of structural steel. Each station is tailored to its function and projected ridership while meeting stringent requirements for safety, durability, and lifecycle cost.
Project Scope
- Stations: Elevated Stations 114–118
- Associated Works: Covered entrances, enclosed pedestrian bridges, canopies, escalators and lifts, wayfinding, and integrated e-ticketing
- Structural Systems: Steel portal frames, space frames, and trusses with high-strength bolted and qualified welded connections, designed for wind, snow, and seismic loads
- Total Structural Steel: ~4,000 tons, distributed according to span requirements and peak passenger flows
Station Summaries (114–118)
Station 114 — Multi-Entrance Elevated Hub
- Role: Serves expanding residential districts
- Structure: Galvanized box columns with lightweight roof trusses; curved, high-performance glazing for thermal and acoustic comfort
- Operations: Separated up/down passenger streams, barrier-free access, integrated smart gates
Station 115 — Interchange-Ready Node
- Role: Prepared for future connections to other urban transit modes
- Structure: Wide-span portal frames with high-strength bolted connections to accelerate erection and reduce traffic disruption
- Safety: Redundant egress sized for peak-hour densities; clear evacuation routes
Station 116 — Community Services Gateway
- Role: Serves nearby educational/medical facilities
- Structure: Insulated steel canopies and fully enclosed pedestrian links for all-weather protection
- User Comfort: Acoustic ceiling systems, shaded waiting areas, and anti-slip floor finishes
Station 117 — Green-Belt Connector
- Role: Bridges suburban areas with the city core
- Structure: Space-frame roof for large column-free spans; provisions for future rooftop photovoltaics and controlled rainwater drainage
- Sustainability: High-reflectance materials and daylighting strategies
Station 118 — High-Capacity Terminal
- Role: Terminal/feeder hub with bus bay integration
- Structure: Composite steel members enabling longer spans; multiple passenger corridors on one level to avoid crossflows
- Operations: Crowd-management zones and digital wayfinding
Entrances & Pedestrian Overpasses
- Entrances: Steel frames clad with tempered glass and composite panels; roof falls optimized for maintenance access
- Overpasses: Fully enclosed bridges sized for peak loads, designed for wind/ice, with anti-slip decks, snow guards, and de-icing provisions
Engineering & Materials
- Members: H/I sections, welded box sections, tubular trusses, and space-frame nodes
- Protection: Surface preparation to recognized standards, multi-coat corrosion-resistant paint systems, and hot-dip galvanizing for exposed members
- Envelope: Low-E double glazing and composite cladding; acoustic and thermal performance verified
- Foundations & Bearings: RC foundations with precision base plates and anchor bolts; laser-aligned during erection
Execution, Quality & Safety
- BIM Coordination: 3D clash detection, accurate quantity takeoff, and sequenced erection planning
- Fabrication: CNC cutting/drilling; WPS/PQR-qualified welding; dimensional inspections
- Erection: Controlled lifting plans, calibrated torque for bolts, NDT where required
- HSE: Access control, temporary edge protection, clear egress maintained during works
Schedule & Logistics
- Phased steel delivery aligned with fabrication batches
- Near-site laydown areas to minimize in-city transport
- Night/off-peak work windows for activities affecting traffic
Urban & Economic Impact
- Reduced travel times and improved network reliability
- Enhanced city skyline through contemporary architectural envelopes
- Transit-oriented development potential around stations
Key Figures
- Stations: 5 elevated (114–118)
- Associated Structures: Entrances + enclosed pedestrian bridges + canopies
- Approx. Steel Tonnage: ~4,000 t
- Design Criteria: Wind/snow/seismic actions, egress capacity, maintainability, and future expansion
- Why does steel quantity differ between stations?
Because span lengths, number of entrances, architectural envelope, and peak ridership vary per location, driving distinct structural solutions. - How is construction speed achieved without compromising quality?
Through off-site prefabrication, high-strength bolted connections, BIM-led coordination, and just-in-time delivery to streamline on-site assembly. - What measures reduce lifecycle maintenance?
Durable corrosion-protection systems, accessible roof walkways, modular cladding panels, and standardized connection details for easy replacement. - Looking for a proven partner to deliver complex steel station structures and pedestrian overpasses for urban rail?
