Yunzhong Road Airport Link Bridge, Hohhot 3.26 km Elevated, 35 m Width, 8 Lanes Steel–Concrete Composite & Steel Box Girders

Zhong Heng Feng Construction Group delivered a 3.26 km elevated mainline and ramps for the Yunzhong Road Airport Link in Hohhot (35 m standard width, eight lanes). The superstructure combines prestressed concrete continuous small box girders, steel box girders, and full-welded steel–concrete composite beams with shear keys. P61–P72 steel box girder joint length: 446.025 m. Substructure: cast-in-place beam cap + pier + abutment + drilled shafts.

The Yunzhong Road New Airport Connection Line improves access between the city and the new airport in Hohhot. Designed by the South China Municipal Engineering Design Institute, the bridge package executed by Zhong Heng Feng Construction Group Co., Ltd. comprises a 3.26 km elevated mainline with parallel ramps, built to a 35 m standard width and eight lanes to support high traffic volumes and expansion needs.

Structural Systems

  • Superstructure mix: prestressed concrete simply supported continuous small box girders, steel box girders, and steel–concrete composite beams selected by span and alignment.
  • Composite beams: full-welded steel girders with main and cross beams plus I-shaped bracing ribs; the top flange includes shear keys to achieve full composite action with the deck.
  • Steel box girder segment: P61–P72 joint total 446.025 m, optimized for torsion and aerodynamic performance.
  • Substructure: cast-in-place beam cap + pier + abutment + drilled shafts, providing durable load transfer.

Construction Approach

  • Sequenced erection to maintain traffic, with night/low-traffic windows for critical lifts.
  • Precision surveying for girder alignment and camber; VT/UT/MT on critical welds at hold points.
  • Protective coating system tailored to local climate for long-term durability.

Performance & Benefits

  • High-capacity, eight-lane facility delivering smoother airport access and reduced congestion.
  • Robust composite solution combining fast steel erection with concrete durability and ride quality.
  • Maintainable details: accessible bearings, durable coatings, standardized diaphragms.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1) What does this project include?
The package covers the mainline elevated bridge (3.26 km), parallel ramps, and related works for the Yunzhong Road New Airport Connection Line in Hohhot.

2) Who designed and who built it?
The design was provided by the South China Municipal Engineering Design Institute (China National Engineering Consulting Group). Zhong Heng Feng Construction Group Co., Ltd. executed the bridge works.

3) What is the deck width and lane configuration?
Standard width is 35 m with eight lanes in two directions to support high traffic volumes to the airport.

4) Which superstructure systems were used?
A span-by-span mix of prestressed concrete continuous small box girders, steel box girders, and steel–concrete composite beams.

5) Why combine steel and concrete systems?
The hybrid approach optimizes span lengths, erection speed, durability, lifecycle cost, and riding comfort while accommodating curves and ramps.

6) How do the composite beams work?
Full-welded steel main and cross beams with I-bracing carry shear keys on the top flange that interlock with the concrete deck, creating true composite action and higher stiffness.

7) What is the length of the steel box girder segment?
The P61–P72 steel box girder joint totals 446.025 m.

8) What foundations and substructure were used?
Cast-in-place beam caps, piers, abutments, and drilled shafts, designed for long-term durability and efficient load transfer.

9) How was traffic maintained during construction?
Staged erection, night/low-traffic windows for critical operations, segregated laydown areas, and just-in-time deliveries to minimize disruption.

10) How was structural accuracy controlled?
Total-station and laser surveying for line, level, and camber; predefined hold points; fit-up checks; and progressive alignment verification during girder setting.

11) What quality assurance measures were applied?
Welding procedures qualified (WPS/PQR), inspections (VT, MT/UT) at critical joints, bolt-tension verification, and coating DFT testing with full QA records.

12) What corrosion protection was specified?
Surface preparation to recognized standards and multi-coat protective paint systems tailored to the local climate for long-term performance.

13) How does the design address seismic and wind actions?
Superstructure and substructure were verified for wind, seismic, and temperature effects, with bearings, expansion joints, and diaphragms sized accordingly.

14) What are the key benefits for the city and airport?
Increased capacity, smoother airport access, reduced congestion, and a resilient link that supports future growth in air travel and logistics.

15) Can Zhong Heng Feng deliver similar airport connectors or urban expressway bridges?
Yes. We provide end-to-end services—engineering coordination, fabrication, erection, and construction—for steel box girders, composite systems, and prestressed concrete bridges. Share your drawings and target schedule for a tailored proposal.
